Best 64GB VRAM Setup for Local LLMs (2026): Two R9700s Win

No consumer graphics card has 64GB of VRAM. You build 64GB from two 32GB cards, four 16GB cards, or one workstation or datacenter card. As of October 2026 the same 64GB costs between about $19 and $200 per gigabyte, depending on the route. This page picks the hardware. For the models to run on it, read our 64GB VRAM model page.

Bottom Line (2026)

  • No consumer GPU has 64GB. Every route is two 32GB cards, four 16GB cards, or one workstation or datacenter card.
  • Best 64GB for most people: two Radeon AI PRO R9700s, about $3,550-4,050 for the pair as of October 2026. 300W per card, blower cooling, and current ROCm support.
  • Fastest 64GB: two RTX 5090s, 1,792 GB/s per card and full CUDA support. The pair costs $8,600-12,800, and draws 1,150W of GPU power alone.
  • Cheapest 64GB: two used MI50s, about $1,200-1,660 in asking prices. Old silicon, passive cooling, and no current ROCm support.
  • One card, no split: a used MI210 64GB (from about $4,300 asking) or an RTX PRO 5000 Blackwell 72GB ($9,000-10,000).
  • Need capacity, not speed? A 128GB Strix Halo box costs less than two R9700s and holds models that 64GB of VRAM cannot.

Prices are US street, as of October 2026. For the models that fit 64GB, read Best Local LLM for 64GB VRAM. This page picks the hardware.

Why No Single Card Gives You 64GB

The consumer ceiling is 32GB. The RTX 5090, the Radeon AI PRO R9700 and the Intel Arc Pro B70 each carry 32GB. The next tier up skips 64GB: the RTX PRO 5000 Blackwell comes in 48GB and 72GB, and the RTX PRO 6000 has 96GB. The only card with exactly 64GB is the AMD Instinct MI210, a passive datacenter accelerator.

So “64GB VRAM GPU” almost always means a two-card build. That changes three things: the motherboard, the PSU, and how fast the model runs.

The Eight Routes

Bandwidth is per card, from vendor specs. Price per GB uses the low and high end of the October 2026 price range.

Power figures are the vendor board-power rating times the card count. Add the CPU, board and drives on top.

Route 1 — Two Radeon AI PRO R9700s (the pick)

The R9700 is a 32GB RDNA 4 workstation card. AMD rates it at 640 GB/s and 300W board power, on PCIe 5.0 x16. It sits on the current ROCm support matrix as gfx1201.

GPU Poet tracked R9700 listings from $1,817 in October 2026, with daily lowest averages between $1,767 and $2,016. The $1,299 launch MSRP is no longer the street price. A pair costs about $3,550-4,050.

Two cards draw 600W. A 1000W PSU covers that with margin. Bandwidth is 36% of an RTX 5090 (640 ÷ 1,792), so generation is slower. You pay about a third of the price for the same 64GB.

XFX Radeon AI PRO R9700 32GB

Route 2 — Two RTX 5090s (the fast one)

Each RTX 5090 carries 32GB of GDDR7 on a 512-bit bus at 1,792 GB/s. NVIDIA rates it at 575W and asks for a 1000W system PSU for one card. CUDA runs everything, and every new model lands on CUDA first.

Price is the problem. The lowest US price we have is a $4,299 in-store deal on 22 September 2026. In October, GPU Poet tracked 88 marketplace listings from $6,416. Two cards cost $8,600 at the September floor and about $12,800 at October marketplace prices. That is $134-200 per GB.

Plan for three-slot cards, a 1200W-class PSU, and a board with two x8 slots. See the power section below before you buy.

GIGABYTE RTX 5090 32GB

Route 3 — Two Intel Arc Pro B70s

The B70 has 32GB of GDDR6 at 608 GB/s. Intel rates its own design at 230W. Partner cards range from 160W to 290W.

GPU Poet tracked October daily lowest averages of $1,386-1,532, and a lowest live listing of $1,705. A pair costs about $2,770-3,410. That is cheaper than two R9700s, at almost the same bandwidth.

The tradeoff is software. You run llama.cpp on SYCL or Vulkan, not CUDA or ROCm. Read our B70 verdict before you choose it.

Route 4 — Two used AMD MI50 32GB cards

The MI50 has 32GB of HBM2 at 1 TB/s and a 300W TDP. On bandwidth it beats the R9700 and the B70. eBay asking prices were about $600-830 per card in late September 2026. We found no verified completed-sale prices.

The MI50 is passive. It needs a server chassis or a fan shroud. It is not on the current ROCm compatibility matrix, so you depend on Vulkan or community ROCm builds. Buy two only if you enjoy that work. See the MI50 page.

Route 5 — One card above 64GB: RTX PRO 5000 72GB or a used MI210

RTX PRO 5000 Blackwell 72GB. NVIDIA lists 72GB of GDDR7 with ECC, 1,344 GB/s, 300W, dual-slot, active cooling. Retailer reads on 27 September 2026 were $8,999.99-9,999.99, with thin stock. You get one pool, no split, and CUDA. At $125-139 per GB it costs more than twice as much per GB as two R9700s.

AMD Instinct MI210 64GB. Lenovo’s spec sheet lists 64GB of HBM2e, 1.6 TB/s, 300W, passive cooling, and PCIe Gen 4 x16. It is on the current ROCm support matrix as gfx90a. Used eBay asking prices start near $4,299, per one tracker read on 7 October 2026, with other listings at $4,599-5,199. Treat these as asking prices. Like the MI50, it needs forced airflow.

Route 6 — Four 16GB cards

Four RTX 5060 Ti 16GB cards give 64GB on CUDA. Each card runs 448 GB/s at 180W, on a PCIe 5.0 x8 link. Four cards at $589-805 each cost about $2,360-3,220.

The board is the hard part. Few consumer boards have four usable slots with room for four dual-slot cards. Each card has 25% of an RTX 5090’s bandwidth (448 ÷ 1,792). Read the multi-GPU board guide first.

Route 7 — A 48GB card plus a 16GB card

If you already own a 48GB card, add a 16GB card for 64GB total. The second card costs $589-805 (an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB). Expect the slower card to set the pace on the layers it holds. Do not buy two mismatched cards new for this.

Route 8 — Unified memory, if you only need capacity

A Strix Halo box (Ryzen AI Max+ 395, 128GB) has a 256-bit LPDDR5X-8000 bus: 8,000 MT/s × 32 bytes = 256 GB/s. That is 14% of one RTX 5090. The GMKtec EVO-X2 128GB was $3,499.99 and the Minisforum MS-S1 MAX $3,799 on 23 September 2026. The DGX Spark lists at $4,699 for 128GB at 273 GB/s, and was reported sold out in September.

These boxes hold models that 64GB of VRAM cannot. They run them slowly. Compare the boxes on our Strix Halo buying page.

Speed class is a ratio, not a benchmark. On a memory-bound model, generation speed tracks bandwidth, so a card with 36% of the bandwidth reaches at most about 36% of the speed. Real numbers come in lower. We did not test Laguna S 2.1 on ROCm, SYCL or Vulkan builds. Check that your backend supports a new model architecture before you buy hardware for it.

The Thing Most 64GB Guides Get Wrong

Two cards double your capacity, not your speed. With a layer split, each token passes through card one, then card two. At any moment one card works and the other waits. Generation runs at roughly one card’s bandwidth. Two R9700s give you 64GB at R9700 speed, not at 1,280 GB/s.

The wall outlet is a real limit. A 15A, 120V circuit supplies 1,800W. The common 80% rule for continuous loads leaves 1,440W. Two RTX 5090s are rated at 1,150W together, before the CPU, fans and PSU losses. A long inference run on that pair sits close to the circuit limit. The fixes are a power cap on each card, or a dedicated 20A circuit at roughly $250-900 installed. Two R9700s at 600W need neither.

Price per GB spreads 10x. The table above runs from $19 to $200 per GB for the same 64GB. The cheap end buys old silicon with no vendor support. The expensive end buys CUDA and speed. The R9700 pair sits in the middle with current software.

Which One Should You Buy?

  1. Best 64GB for most buyers — two Radeon AI PRO R9700s and a 1000W PSU. About $3,550-4,050 for the cards.
  2. Speed matters most, budget does not — two RTX 5090s, a 1200W-class PSU, and a plan for the circuit.
  3. One card, no split, CUDA — RTX PRO 5000 Blackwell 72GB, if you can find stock.
  4. One card, no split, cheaper — a used MI210 64GB, if you have server airflow.
  5. Lowest cost, you like tinkering — two used MI50s, or two Arc Pro B70s if you want a new card with a warranty.
  6. You only need the model to load — a 128GB Strix Halo box. Slower, but more capacity than any route above.
  7. You actually needed 48GB — a 70B at Q4 fits 48GB. See the 48GB VRAM setup page.
