  • You cannot buy a 64GB Mac mini M4 Pro. Apple removed the option in early May 2026. The M4 Pro ceiling is 48GB.
  • The base M4 Mac mini lost its 32GB option in the same round. It is now 16GB or 24GB only, starting at $799.
  • 48GB is a good 27B-to-35B machine. It runs Qwen 3.6 27B at Q4 around 15-18 tok/s on ~273 GB/s of bandwidth.

  • The honest non-Apple answer: a 128GB unified-memory box gives you nearly 3x the memory for a similar or lower price, and it is the only way to buy your way out of this tier right now.

The Comparison That Stopped Existing

Almost every “48GB vs 64GB Mac mini” article still on the web was written when both configurations were orderable. They are not.

Apple cut Mac memory options in waves through spring 2026. By the May 5, 2026 round, the Mac mini M4 Pro had lost its 64GB tier and the base M4 mini had lost 32GB. The same round removed the 256GB configuration from the Mac Studio M3 Ultra. Apple attributed the cuts to the global memory shortage, which is the same AI-server demand surge that roughly doubled DDR5 contract prices inside a single quarter.

So the practical question changed. It is no longer “should I spend the extra for 64GB.” It is “is 48GB enough, and if not, what do I buy?”

What the Mac mini Line Actually Offers Now

Two of those rows used to read differently. The M4 Pro row said 24/48/64GB. The M3 Ultra row said up to 512GB. Both shrank in 2026, and the 512GB Mac Studio that anchored a whole genre of “run a 600B model at home” content is simply no longer sold.

Is 48GB Enough? Do the Memory Budget

Unified memory is not a VRAM pool with system RAM behind it. It is one pool, and macOS, your browser, the runtime, and the KV cache all draw from the same 48GB the model does.

A workable budget on a 48GB machine:

That budget is the whole answer:

  • Qwen 3.6 27B at Q4 needs about 18GB of weights. Comfortable, with room for a large context and a second small model resident.
  • Qwen 3.6 27B at Q8 needs about 30GB. Fits, with tighter context.
  • A 35B-A3B MoE at Q4 needs about 23GB. Comfortable, and it is the better agent pick because sparse MoE decodes far faster than dense weights on limited bandwidth.
  • A dense 70B at Q4 needs about 40GB. It exceeds the practical budget. It will load on a quiet system and then fail the moment a long agent run grows the KV cache.

This is the line most reviews get wrong. They report that a 48GB Mac “runs a 70B” because the weights fit in the raw 48GB number. Fitting weights at idle and sustaining an agent workload are different claims. If you want dependable 70B work, 48GB is not the tier — and it never really was, even when 64GB existed.

What You Actually Lost With the 64GB Option

Be precise about the loss, because it is smaller than it sounds. 64GB would have moved the practical weight budget from ~36GB to ~52GB. That is the difference between “a dense 70B at Q4 is a stretch” and “a dense 70B at Q4 works with moderate context.” It would not have unlocked 100B-class models or Q8 70B.

So the 64GB Mac mini was never the 70B machine people wanted. It was the machine where a 70B stopped being uncomfortable. Its removal costs you exactly one model tier, and only the dense variant of it.

What To Buy Instead

If 48GB is enough — buy the 48GB M4 Pro. It is a genuinely good local-AI host: silent, roughly 30W under sustained inference, and fast enough at 273 GB/s for 27B-class agent work. For most OpenClaw setups this is the right machine and always was.

If you want the most memory per dollar — leave Apple. A 128GB Ryzen AI Max+ 395 mini PC starts around $2,299 when in stock, and an ASUS Ascent GX10 is $3,999 with 128GB and CUDA. Both give you far more memory than any orderable Mac mini. Both are also slower per token than you expect at ~256 GB/s, so read the Strix Halo model picks before assuming capacity equals capability.

Mac mini M4 (the 16/24GB base tier) remains the cheapest quiet always-on host if you only need 9B-14B models — just do not expect 27B work from it.

The Buying Rule This Shortage Creates

Apple’s memory is soldered. You cannot add RAM later, and in 2026 you also cannot rely on a configuration being available next quarter. Two cuts landed on this product line inside three months.

That inverts the usual advice. The old rule was “buy the memory you need.” The 2026 rule is buy the highest memory tier you can justify, the day you buy the machine, because the tier above the one you chose may not exist when you go back for it. Buyers who configured 64GB Mac minis in April got a machine that cannot be ordered in August.
