Which Used RTX 3090 Should You Buy for Local LLMs?

Bottom Line (September 2026)

• Speed is identical. Every RTX 3090 has the same GA102 chip and the same 24GB of GDDR6X. No board partner model runs a model faster.
• Best overall used pick: EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3. Owners report 75-80C memory temperatures under full load. It needs three 8-pin cables and takes about 2.75 slots.
• Best for two cards: EVGA RTX 3090 XC3. It is the slimmest common air-cooled 3090, at about 2.2 slots, with two 8-pin connectors.
• Buy only at a discount: Founders Edition. Owners report 100-110C memory temperatures under full load. It is a full 3-slot card with a 12-pin adapter.
• Check the PCIe tab on any Gigabyte card. Repair shops reported cracks near the PCIe slot latch on Gigabyte RTX 30 cards, and Gigabyte reportedly refused those RMAs.
• Price as of September 2026: $1,395 to $1,450 used. No tracker splits that price by model. Condition matters more than brand.

Why the model still matters when the speed does not

Local LLM decode speed is set by memory bandwidth, and the memory bus is the same on every 3090. So benchmarks do not separate these cards. Three physical things do:

1. Backside VRAM cooling. The 3090 has 12 of its 24 memory chips on the back of the PCB. Long inference and fine-tune runs keep them hot for hours. Cooler memory is the main thing you pay for.
2. Slot width. This matters only if you plan a second 3090. Two thick cards need the right gap between the x16 slots.
3. Power connectors. A 3x 8-pin card needs three separate PCIe cables. Two of them need six. Your PSU must have them.

The Models Compared

Neither tracker splits the price by board partner. “Check listing” means we could not confirm the number from a source we read. Do not guess it; ask the seller or check the model number.

Backside memory is the part that wears out

The Founders Edition number is the one to remember. Owners report its memory at 100-110C under full load. GDDR6X is specified to about 110C, so that card runs at its limit with no margin. The EVGA FTW3 owners in the same thread report 75-80C. That is a 25-30C gap on the same chip.

A gaming number does not transfer to inference. A game loads the card in bursts. A long inference or LoRA run keeps the memory hot for hours. So treat any temperature you read, including the ones above, as a minimum.

You can fix a hot card. One owner cut a Founders Edition from 110C to 86C by replacing the thermal pads. That is a real repair job, and it voids nothing because the warranty is already gone. Price it into your offer.

No 3090 is really 2-slot

Board partners sold several 3090s as “2-slot”. PCPartPicker users measured them: the XC3 is about 2.2 slots and the FTW3 about 2.75. The ASUS TUF spec sheet says 2.7. The Founders Edition is a full 3.

For a dual-3090 build this is the decision. Two 2.75-slot cards need at least three free slots between the x16 connectors, and the top card then breathes through a thin gap. Your options:

• A motherboard with wide x16 spacing, and the slimmest card you can find (the XC3).
• A hybrid AIO card, such as the EVGA XC3 Hybrid or FTW3 Hybrid, which moves the heat to a radiator.
• A PCIe riser to mount the second card away from the first.

If you want NVLink on top, the bridge spacing must match your slot gap as well. Most inference setups do not need it.

Count your PCIe cables before you pick

EVGA’s FTW3 uses three 8-pin connectors and is rated up to about 450W when overclocked. The XC3 and the Founders Edition are 350W cards. Two FTW3s need six separate PCIe cables. Many 850W units do not have six. A 2x 8-pin card (XC3, TUF, Zotac Trinity) needs only four for two cards.

Whatever you buy, you can lower the power limit with nvidia-smi -pl for 24/7 inference. Decode speed is bandwidth-bound, so a moderate cap usually costs little speed. Measure it on your own card.

Known issues by brand

• EVGA. In 2021, some 3090 FTW3 cards failed while running the game New World. EVGA traced it to poor soldering around the MOSFETs and replaced the cards. EVGA then left the GPU business on September 16, 2022. So EVGA is the best-cooled option with the weakest after-sales support today. That matters less than it sounds: no 3090 has a useful warranty in 2026.
• Gigabyte. In 2023, repair technicians reported cracks in Gigabyte RTX 30 and 40 PCBs near the PCIe slot latch. Gigabyte reportedly refused RMAs for them. Look at the card edge next to the PCIe latch in good light before you pay.
• Founders Edition. Hot memory, and a 12-pin plug that needs the adapter. Ask the seller if the adapter is in the box.

Which One Should You Buy?

1. One card, air-cooled, you want it to last — EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3. The best reported memory temperatures. Make sure your PSU has three free 8-pin cables.
2. Two cards now, or later — EVGA RTX 3090 XC3, or an XC3/FTW3 Hybrid if you find one. The thinnest common air cooler, and two 8-pin plugs per card.
3. You found a Founders Edition cheap — buy it only below the market range, and budget for new thermal pads. Check that the 12-pin adapter is included.
4. ASUS TUF or Zotac Trinity at a fair price — a good buy. Both use two 8-pin connectors. Test memory temperature under sustained load before the return window closes.
5. Gigabyte — fine if the PCB edge at the PCIe latch is clean. Walk away if you see any crack or bend.
