A card that mined at a steady 70°C may carry less accumulated stress than a gaming card that thermal-cycled between 30°C and 85°C for four years. Thermal cycling is what kills solder joints. Constant temperature is comparatively gentle. Mining history is a reason to test carefully and to negotiate — it is not an automatic no.

What is a red flag: a mining card from a poorly ventilated rig, which is exactly where the 3090’s specific weakness gets exercised.

2. Check GPU-Z fan hours

Open GPU-Z and look at the Sensors tab for fan hours and thermal history. Figures above roughly 100,000 fan hours indicate heavy sustained use. This is the fastest read on how hard the card lived, and it takes thirty seconds.

3. Run memtest_vulkan — this is the real test

Run memtest_vulkan for 15-30 minutes. Any error count above zero means return the card.

Use memtest_vulkan specifically. It works on any GPU and does not require the CUDA toolkit, so you can run it on a bare machine without setting up a full inference stack first. There is no partial credit here — VRAM errors do not heal, and a card with one error will produce garbage output or hard crashes under a model that fills the memory.

This is the step people skip because it takes half an hour. It is the only step that reliably catches the 3090’s characteristic failure.

4. Load it sustained, and watch the right temperature

Run the card under sustained heavy load and watch VRAM junction temperature and hotspot behaviour, not core temperature. Watch how the fans cope when pushed.

Here is why that distinction matters, and it is specific to this card: the RTX 3090 has VRAM chips on both sides of the PCB. The backside chips are poorly cooled in many board designs and run hot. In a badly ventilated rig that heat degrades them over time, producing instability or failure. A dying 3090 often shows a perfectly healthy core temperature while its memory is cooking.

If it survives extended load plus real inference workloads without errors, the card’s history genuinely stops mattering.

5. Buy where you can return it

Buy through a platform with buyer protection, or inspect physically before paying. If you can, bring a laptop with a Thunderbolt eGPU dock to a local sale and test on the spot. At minimum, inspect the card physically before money changes hands.

Do not buy a $1,200 GPU by bank transfer from a stranger. The return window is the actual product you are paying the platform fee for.

When the used 3090 is the wrong buy
