Best Ryzen AI Max+ 395 Alternative (2026): No Tower Beats It
A 128GB Ryzen AI Max+ 395 box costs $3,499.99 as of October 2026. The alternatives are faster, have CUDA, or cost less, but each one gives something up. The one alternative most people ask about, a desktop tower with 128GB of DDR5 and a GPU, now costs about $1,000 more than the box and has about a third of its memory bandwidth.
Bottom Line
The 128GB Ryzen AI Max+ 395 box costs $3,499.99 (GMKtec EVO-X2, 128GB/1TB, gmktec.com, 2026-10-01). Here is what to buy instead, by buyer:
- You want more speed: Mac Studio M5 Max, 40-core GPU, 128GB. $5,099. 614 GB/s against 256 GB/s.
- You need CUDA: NVIDIA DGX Spark. $4,699 list. About the same decode speed as the 395, much faster prompt processing.
- You want to spend less: the 64GB 395 box ($2,199.99) or Mac mini M5 Pro 64GB ($2,699). Neither holds gpt-oss 120B.
- You want a desktop tower instead: do not build one to replace the 128GB box. 128GB of DDR5 alone costs $2,099.99 or more. The tower costs about $1,000 more and has about 35% of the box’s memory bandwidth.
- You want the 395 in a desktop case: that is the Framework Desktop. It was out of stock on 2026-10-01.

The tests use different runtimes and settings. Read the speeds as tiers, not exact rankings. The system-RAM bandwidth figures are our arithmetic: transfer rate × 16 bytes for two DDR5 channels.
Faster: Mac Studio M5 Max 128GB
The Mac Studio M5 Max with the 40-core GPU has 614 GB/s of memory bandwidth (apple.com/mac-studio/specs). That is 2.4 times the 395. Apple’s configurator showed $5,099 for 128GB and 512GB of storage on 2026-10-01.
Decode speed follows bandwidth. The community MLX run measured gpt-oss 120B at 87.9 tok/s at 4K context, and 64.5 tok/s at 32K. That is about 55% faster than the 395’s 56.6 tok/s. The gap is larger on dense models, where every token reads all of the weights.
What you give up:
- $1,599 over the cheapest 128GB 395 box.
- CUDA. The Mac runs MLX and llama.cpp on Metal.
- Upgrades. The memory is soldered, as on the 395.
Only the 40-core GPU configuration takes 128GB. The 32-core version is sold with 36GB only. The older M4 Max Mac Studio is discontinued. Do not buy it as the “cheaper Mac” unless you can confirm the memory size and the price on the listing.
CUDA: NVIDIA DGX Spark
NVIDIA lists the DGX Spark with 128GB of LPDDR5x on a 256-bit bus at 273 GB/s. The bandwidth is 7% higher than the 395. Decode speed is about equal: 58.7 tok/s against 56.6 tok/s on gpt-oss 120B.
The Spark wins on prompt processing. llama.cpp’s benchmark shows 2,444 tok/s on a 2,048-token prompt. The kyuz0 Strix Halo run shows 720 tok/s on a 512-token prompt. The tests differ, but the gap is real. It matters for coding agents that send long prompts on every turn.
The list price is $4,699 for the Founders Edition. NVIDIA’s store was reported sold out in September 2026, and Newegg showed $5,399.99 in mid-September. If you need CUDA, vLLM, or NVIDIA’s containers, this is the box:
NVIDIA DGX Spark 128GB. Check the seller and the price against the $4,699 list before you order.
The partner GB10 boxes are not cheaper any more. On 2026-10-01 Newegg listed the ASUS Ascent GX10 at $6,449 (1TB, third-party seller) and $8,499.99 (2TB). That is more than the Spark’s list price for the same GB10 chip.
Cheaper: the 64GB 395 Box or the Mac mini M5 Pro
GMKtec EVO-X2 64GB, $2,199.99. It has the same chip and the same 256 GB/s. On every model that fits, it runs at the same speed as the 128GB box. You save $1,300. You lose gpt-oss 120B and every larger model, and the memory is soldered.
GMKtec EVO-X2. Confirm the memory size on the listing. The 64GB and 128GB versions look the same.
Mac mini M5 Pro 64GB, $2,699. It has 307 GB/s, 20% more than the 395 (apple.com/mac-mini/specs). It costs $800 less than the 128GB box. It suits 30B-class models that fit in 64GB.
The cost of both: gpt-oss 120B is 63.4GB. It does not fit in a 64GB machine with an operating system on it. If gpt-oss 120B is the reason you looked at the 395, neither cheaper option replaces it.
The Desktop Equivalent: What a Tower Costs
There are two answers to “desktop equivalent”.
The literal one is the Framework Desktop. It is the same Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with soldered LPDDR5x, in a desktop case. frame.work lists 128GB at $3,449 and 64GB at $1,959. Every configuration showed “Out of stock” on 2026-10-01. Framework sells it direct only.
The other one is a tower: a socketed CPU, DDR5, and a GPU, with llama.cpp --n-cpu-moe keeping the MoE expert weights in system RAM. See —n-cpu-moe explained for how the flag works. Here is what that tower costs:
| Part | Price | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| AMD Ryzen 9 9950X | $549.00 | Newegg, sold by Newegg, 2026-10-01 |
| 128GB DDR5-5600 (2 × 64GB, Crucial Pro) | $2,099.99 | Newegg marketplace, cheapest of 20 listings, 2026-10-01 |
| Used RTX 3090 24GB | ~$1,486 average | resaleprices.com, 313 listings, 2026-10-01 |
| B650 motherboard | $140–215 | Our August 2026 price reference |
| 850W Gold power supply | $90–120 | Our August 2026 price reference |
| 1TB NVMe SSD | $90–165 | Our August 2026 price reference |
| Total, before case and CPU cooler | ~$4,455–4,635 | Our arithmetic |
That is $955 to $1,135 more than the $3,499.99 box, which includes a 1TB SSD, a case and cooling.
The memory is the problem. Most of the 20 Newegg listings for a 2 × 64GB DDR5 kit were $2,700 to $4,100. The cheapest was $2,099.99, about $16.40 per GB. That one kit costs more than the GMKtec EVO-X2 64GB as a whole computer.
The bandwidth is the second problem. AMD’s Ryzen 9 9950X page lists the memory limits:
| DIMM layout | AMD max speed | Bandwidth (our arithmetic) | Share of the 395’s 256 GB/s |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 DIMMs, dual-rank (2 × 64GB) | DDR5-5600 | 89.6 GB/s | 35% |
| 4 DIMMs, single- or dual-rank (4 × 32GB) | DDR5-3600 | 57.6 GB/s | 22.5% |
The 9950X has two memory channels. Faster EXPO kits exist, but AMD’s rated maximum is DDR5-5600. Anything faster is overclocking. With four DIMMs the official limit falls to DDR5-3600. The expert weights sit in this RAM, so it sets the speed for any model that does not fit in the 24GB card. We found no published gpt-oss 120B or 100B+ MoE benchmark on a 128GB DDR5 tower. We do not give a number.
The cheaper tower that does run gpt-oss 120B
gpt-oss 120B does not need 128GB of system RAM. One community run fit it on an RTX 3090 and 64GB of DDR5-5200 with --n-cpu-moe 25, and measured 26.9 tok/s decode. A 64GB DDR5 kit cost $919.99 at Newegg on 2026-10-01 (Team T-Force Delta DDR5-5200, sold by Newegg).
With the same CPU, GPU and parts as above, that tower costs about $3,275–3,455 before a case. That is level with the 128GB box. It runs gpt-oss 120B at about half the speed. With an 8-core CPU instead of the 9950X, the total falls by about $210 (Ryzen 7 9700X, $339 at Newegg).
The tower wins in three places:
- Models that fit in 24GB. The llama.cpp gpt-oss guide shows gpt-oss 20B at 161.8 tok/s on an RTX 3090. kyuz0 shows 79.8 tok/s on the 395.
- CUDA, for every tool that needs it.
- Upgrades. You can add a second GPU or more RAM later. The 395 box is final.
It loses on models from about 85GB to about 120GB, such as Qwen3.5-122B-A10B at Q5_K_XL (85.6 GiB). The 64GB tower cannot hold them, and the 128GB tower costs $1,000 more than the box.
When to Keep the 395
Buy the 128GB 395 box if all of these are true:
- Your main models are MoE models between 64GB and about 110GB, such as gpt-oss 120B.
- You do not need CUDA.
- You run Linux. AMD documents 96GB as the BIOS maximum for GPU memory, and a Linux kernel parameter that raises it to 120GB.
- Your budget stops below $4,000.
In that case, no tower, Mac, or GB10 box gives you the same capacity and speed for less money:
Ryzen AI Max+ 395 128GB boxes. Check the memory size and stock on each listing. The vendor stores listed the GMKtec EVO-X2 at $3,499.99 and the Minisforum MS-S1 MAX at $3,799 (2TB) on 2026-10-01, both in stock.
Do not wait for the 192GB Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 495 to replace it. At our last check (2026-09-23), no 192GB box had a buyable price. It also adds memory, not speed. See PRO 495: wait or buy.
NVIDIA RTX Spark is also not a buy yet. NVIDIA announced it on 2026-06-01 for Windows laptops and compact desktops with up to 128GB of unified memory. Partner machines are due “this fall”. On 2026-10-01 we found no published US price.
FAQ
What is the best alternative to the Ryzen AI Max+ 395?
It depends on what you want more of. For speed, the Mac Studio M5 Max with 128GB ($5,099 on apple.com, October 2026) has 614 GB/s of memory bandwidth against 256 GB/s. A community MLX test on the same chip ran gpt-oss 120B at 87.9 tok/s. For CUDA, the NVIDIA DGX Spark has 128GB at 273 GB/s for a $4,699 list price. To spend less, the GMKtec EVO-X2 with 64GB costs $2,199.99, but it cannot hold gpt-oss 120B.
Is there a desktop equivalent of the Ryzen AI Max+ 395?
The Framework Desktop is the same chip in a desktop case ($3,449 for 128GB, out of stock on 2026-10-01). A DIY tower is not an equivalent at the same price. In October 2026 a 128GB DDR5 kit costs $2,099.99 or more. A Ryzen 9 9950X tower with 128GB and a used RTX 3090 costs about $4,455 to $4,635 before a case. Its dual-channel DDR5-5600 gives 89.6 GB/s, about 35% of the 395’s 256 GB/s.
Is the DGX Spark better than the Ryzen AI Max+ 395?
For software, yes: it runs CUDA. For single-user speed, they are close. llama.cpp’s own DGX Spark benchmark shows gpt-oss 120B at 58.7 tok/s, and the kyuz0 community benchmark shows 56.6 tok/s on a Ryzen AI Max+ 395. The Spark processes prompts much faster. It also costs $4,699 list against $3,499.99 for a 128GB GMKtec EVO-X2, and NVIDIA’s own store was reported sold out in September 2026.
Is a Mac Studio better than Strix Halo for local LLMs?
For decode speed, yes. The Mac Studio M5 Max with the 40-core GPU has 614 GB/s of memory bandwidth, 2.4 times the 256 GB/s of Strix Halo. A community MLX test on an M5 Max with 128GB ran gpt-oss 120B at 87.9 tok/s at 4K context. It costs $5,099 with 128GB, which is $1,599 more than the cheapest 128GB Strix Halo box. It does not run CUDA, and the memory cannot be upgraded.
Can a gaming PC run the same models as a 128GB Strix Halo?
Partly. With llama.cpp —n-cpu-moe, a PC with an RTX 3090 and 64GB of DDR5 runs gpt-oss 120B. One community llama-bench run measured 26.9 tok/s on an RTX 3090 with 64GB of DDR5-5200, about half of the 56.6 tok/s measured on Strix Halo. Models above about 85GB need 128GB of DDR5, which costs $2,099.99 or more in October 2026. Models that fit in 24GB of VRAM run faster on the 3090 than on Strix Halo.
